New Scouts Revs Up

September 13th marked the date of the Venice Vintage Motorcycle Rally.  Weeks prior I began having major work done on my Honda CB400F and was stoked to show it off. I drove from the east side of Los Angeles over to beautiful Venice Beach to meet up with other riders and check out some amazing motorcycle companies, eat some bbq and jam to live rock in the presence of hundreds of other machine heads.

It's really cool to be part of a community that cares so much about old machines. There's a certain charm that just doesn't come with a brand new bike and that only comes after a few decades of love and attention. I love these bikes for the same reasons I love designing for New Scouts - the focus is always on durability, community and celebrating goods that are made to last.

Summers In SoCal

Nothing beats summers in Southern California. The weather is crisp and hot but always carries a nice breeze. The beaches are buzzing with babes, bikes, boards and everything in between. Last weekend we visited one of my favorite shops in Venice Beach – Deus Ex Machina. This rad retail shop carries everything from hand-carved pocket knives to amazing custom motorcycles. This particular weekend they hosted a Surf Swap where surfers from all over brought boards to trade and sell. The back patio was filled with people cracking into cold brews and browsing potential gear. Girls with their own Cali style were talking shop with the best of the boys as local vendors set up booths selling skateboards, hula girls, sunglasses and all the quintessential SoCal accessories.

Ode to Portland

Portland, oh Portland, how you charm me upon every visit. There are drinks; there are trees; there are bikes; there are dogs; there are magnificently designed logos on Dwell-magazine-worthy walls; I could go on. And your sneaky and persuasive 85 degree weather makes summertime the perfect recruiting season for out-of-towners. One particular highlight of the trip was getting together with some co-workers at Laurelhurst park for horseshoes, frisbee, and a barbecue. I don't think I've actually ever played horseshoes, in fact, how does one even acquire a set of horse shoes? But someone had them and we had a pretty good time tossing them around and dodging for our lives.

Towards the end of the horseshoe extravaganza, my dearest Portland friends, whose motorcycle wouldn't start, biked over for a sweaty goodbye. They'd heard about the New Scouts project and were down to let me photograph them wearing the shirt. By this time however the sun was setting and the mosquitos were out for blood -- landing on my EYELIDS while I was trying to snap shots. So to my friends, thanks for your commitment.

I'll be back in Portland again soon because I really just can't get enough of the sweet weather, the good food and the amazing people. 'Til we meet again. Swoon.
